Weds Sport Full Carbon Fiber Wheel

A Japanese company by the name of Weds Sport has come up with the first full carbon fiber wheel. They unveiled the wheels with what they call their Dry Carbon Wheel Project at the last Tokyo Auto Salon show.

One wheel weighs in at just 2.76kg, which works out to be 6.08475844 pounds. Interested in getting a set of these for your car? Expect to pay around $10,000-$12,000 for the set. While it sounds expensive, you can easily spend $8,000+ on custom three-piece forged wheels from a company like HRE.

Weds Sport’s display also featured a wheel with a carbon fiber face, but more than likely a forged aluminum wheel surrounding. This is probably a much cheaper solution, and potentially arguably better looks.

There is some concern about a wheel being 100% carbon fiber that I’ve seen from people online…especially considering the weight of the wheel. Is it strong enough to support a car normally driving, let alone at a race track? What about the cost of repairing the wheel if something gets damaged? Does it need to get fully replaced, or can it be fixed for substantially less cost?

There is another company by the name of Dymag that makes carbon fiber wheels (which we’ll cover in a future post), but their hub is made out of magnesium. Apparently this is for strength reasons, which makes me think these fully carbon fiber rims should only be used for show cars. I’d like to hear Weds Sport’s thoughts on this

Dymag ni company yang dah lama bertapak & buat carbon fibre rim tapi untuk motosikal berkuasa tinggi jer & dah di guna oleh race team dah lama giler, tak sangka dieorang dah nak start buat untuk motokar pulak...

ni DYMAG nye rim, carbon+magnesium... perghhhh

Each DYMAG wheel is made up of a Carbon Fibre rim and Magnesium centre.

The Centre and Magnesium rim are attached via special attachment bolt & sealing system.

The Centre can be colour coded to match or contrast the vehicle. (Colour Chart)

Carbon Rims are fabricated using solid metal moulds in a unique Dymag developed process,
this ensures:
-continuous close tolerances of accuracy direct from the tooling.
-high quality, durable finish which is resistant to brake dust, salt, ultra violet and corrosion.

Carbon Fibre in this form is not only very strong, but is also resistant to shock.

The low weight but high stiffness of carbon Fibre rims produces a very light weight rim to wheel
ratio, significantly reducing the moment of inertia and drastically reducing the amount of power required to start, stop, & turn the vehicle.

The effect of carbon/magnesium wheels when fitted to the car is to reduce the gyroscope effect of the wheel and ultimately producing the following effects:

1. Improved acceleration
2. Improved braking, reduced stopping distance
3. Greater fuel efficiency
4. Lighter, sharper steering
5. Allows for softer damper settings giving more tire contact & therefore better grip.
6. Tire temperatures are more stable.
7. Improved wheel & tire balancing.
8. Reduced rim weight has the effect of at least 5 times the static weight reduction.

Carbon Magnesium Car Wheel - Summary

The performance gain achieved by reducing the wheel mass (Un-sprung Mass) can be quantified using a factor of six. This means that to achieve the same performance gain by reducing the body mass, it is necessary to remove six times the wheel weight saving.

Example
A saving of 2Kg Per Wheel x 4 Wheels = Removing 48 Kg from the Bodywork.

In some instances, Dymag’s Carbon Mag wheels have reduced the wheel weight by up to 5Kg / Wheel, which equates to saving 120Kg from the bodywork to get the same performance advantage.
